When a battle takes place somewhere with the name "Dragon Mountain", you can be confident that the fighting will be anything but dull and ordinary. Sure enough, in this sprawling 255-piece set from Mega Bloks, the action is likely to be pitched and furious as the forces of fire and ice come together in epic war. Dev and Kyra lead the Draigar and Norvagen (both good guys) forces against the Ice Vorgan hordes as the good dragon Lumendraconis battles the evil Frenkuhl. Both dragons are nicely articulated and features mouths that open with the help of a lever on their backs and chests that light up. The Dragon Mountain set sports a working rail system as well as an icy peak that busts apart when struck to reveal a fiery dragon skull. Of course its all Mega Bloks so the component bricks can be used to create a radically different set or append to existing sets to build configurations limited only by the builders imagination. One note: Kyra looks like Angelina Jolie playing Marilyn Manson. --Charlie Williams

Build this catapult for the Vikings and then join them on a mission to stave off the sharp-clawed, fire-breathing Nidhogg dragon by firing cannon balls at this ferocious beast. This multi-faceted toy requires kids to use both construction skills and their creativity to come up with new and exciting adventures. An instruction booklet with detailed color, three-dimensional diagrams shows kids exactly how to fit the 225 pieces together to construct the catapult. Two Nordic figures are also included to man the weapon. No one does battle on the high seas like the Vikings, valiantly fighting fire-breathing dragons from their handcrafted boats. With only 112 pieces and a colorful, easy-to-follow instruction booklet, this engaging set quickly brings the battle to life, leaving lots of time for inventive play. Flexible, flappable multicolored wings propel the dreaded Wyvern Dragon in an imaginary attack on the Viking ship, where two posable warriors in helmets (and horns) have only their bravery, battle-axe, sword, and shields to defend themselves. Two individual boats allow for a coordinated attack, or combine them for one nimble longship that can accommodate more than the two provided figures. In the universe of Dragonball Z items available, this stadium may disappoint fans used to a high level of quality. Whereas Dragonball Z action figures and games are noted for their solid construction and detailed workmanship, the TenkaichiBudokai World Tournament Stadium is a rather flimsy set of plastic and cardboard with pre-applied decals meant to serve as an arena for figures to fight battles. One corner of the white tiled floor features two tiles atop a lever, meant to propel figures into the air thus simulating fighting action. But aside from that relatively minor attribute, the stadium is a letdown. The legion fans of Dragonball Z would be better served improvising their own arenas. Figures not included. --Charlie Williams

Everyone knows trains were invented in the 19th century, right? Well, maybe not; the Iron Dragon game pits two to six players against each other to build the finest railway system through a fantasy world populated with elves, trolls, and fairies. And, of course, dragons--modified to haul freight, though. The large game board is sturdy and well designed, and it's made to be drawn on with erasable crayon as players extend their reach over (and under) the land. Based on the well-known Empire Builder game, Iron Dragon offers some new challenges, including underground building and other fantasy-world tasks.
